Beyoncé’s cover of The Beatles’ “Blackbird” track has been confirmed to contain instrumental elements taken directly from the original 1968 recording. The song was released as part of her new country album, “Cowboy Carter,” and features guitar and production by Paul McCartney, who is listed in the album credits. The track is renamed “Blackbiird” and features additional vocals by four Black women in country music. The song pays tribute to the US civil rights movement and the British slang “bird” for “girl.” Previously, McCartney allowed Rachel Fuller to use the original Beatles track and incorporate new elements in a 2019 recording.

“Cowboy Carter” features Beyoncé’s reworking of Dolly Parton’s “Jolene” and collaborations with Miley Cyrus and Post Malone. Stevie Wonder played harmonica on the cover of “Jolene,” and RAYE is credited as a co-writer on one of the album’s songs. Beyoncé also shared a new remix of “Texas Hold ‘Em.” Jack White, who has collaborated with Beyoncé in the past, received a handwritten note and flowers from the singer, thanking him for his inspiration on the album.

In an NME review, “Cowboy Carter” was described as an intimate and vocal-focused project that showcases Beyoncé’s range. The album’s Act II theme is referenced through spelling alterations on many of its tracks. “Blackbird” was written exclusively by McCartney for the band’s self-titled double LP, which is also known as “The White Album.” John Lennon is attributed in the credits, but he did not contribute to the writing or recording of the track
