Global Ports Holding Plc (GPH) has inked a 50-year agreement to operate services at Liverpool Cruise Terminal, which will see the firm investing up to £25m in doubling its infrastructure. This will allow the port to berthing of two 300-metre-long ships and up to 7,000 passengers a day. The investment will also include the addition of a new terminal building that will be equipped with waterfront retail and hospitality offerings. The terminal’s day-to-day management will be carried out by Cruise Liverpool team, which has worked in the past 17 years.
GPH’s investment will be focused on the construction of a new floating pontoon to help increase capacity and deliver an improved visitor experience. Liverpool’s global connectivity provides enormous potential for access to the Northern European and around Britain cruise markets for American and European customers, as per GPH. In 2023 alone, Liverpool received 102 cruise ships with over 186,000 passengers, which is expected to increase to over 200,000 passengers in 2024, exceeding 300,000 per annum once all the new infrastructure works are completed.
This historic agreement is enabled by the Liverpool City Council, which this week officially surrendered the lease of the existing, award-winning operation it established and has managed since 2007. Liverpool City Council is pleased to have supported this historic agreement between Peel Ports and Global Ports Holdings Plc, stating that it now passes on operational responsibility for Liverpool’s cruise operations to a world-leading operator, GPH, with ambitious plans to boost the city’s position as an excellent cruise and tourism destination.
