Kirsten Dunst has spoken about the iconic upside-down kiss scene in Spider-Man, claiming that it was a difficult experience to film. Dunst portrayed Mary Jane Watson in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy, starring Tobey Maguire between 2002 and 2007. In the scene that she refers to from the 2002 film, Mary Jane kisses Spider-Man in the pouring rain whilst he hangs upside down. Speaking to ITV’s Jonathan Ross Show, Dunst spoke of the challenges involved in filming the scene, such as the pouring rain and Tobey Maguire’s struggles to breathe.
Maguire has also talked about the difficulties of filming the scene, confessing that he was “practically suffocating” whilst performing it. In a statement made two years ago, he described the experience as challenging, “totally out of breath” whilst gasping for oxygen at the end of each take.
Dunst recently revealed that she was given the nickname “girly-girl” by Spider-Man crew members whilst filming the original trilogy, stating in an interview with Variety that the industry has changed since that time. Dunst admitted to not objecting to being called the nickname, but stated that she was 19 and new to the film industry at the time. She has also raised the question of returning to the Spider-Man franchise, with an apparent interest in reprising her role as Mary Jane Watson.
After the release of Spider-Man: No Way Home, which saw Tobey Maguire reprise his role as Peter Parker, Dunst expressed an interest in returning to the franchise. She suggested that the multi-universe storylines in the franchise mean that there could still be opportunities for her to do so. Dunst will soon appear in the new Alex Garland film Civil War, a dystopian action movie set for release on April 12th.
The Spider-Man franchise has seen several new iterations, including the Andrew Garfield/Emma Stone movies, entries into the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Tom Holland and Zendaya, and two Spider-Verse animated films from Sony. Nonetheless, Dunst has spoken several times in recent years about the possibility of returning to the role that made her famous
