It’s not often you come across a celebrity who wears their mobile phone around their neck, but that’s exactly what Lulu does. Her phone, in a designer case no less, is so important to her that she even receives FaceTime calls from Sir Elton John on it. However, Lulu isn’t one to chat before noon, as she revealed in a recent interview. Her strict “on tour” regime means that she doesn’t whisper or shout before midday on show days. “I try not to come out of my room until 12,” she explained. “It makes it easier. I take care of my instrument. It allows me to sing.”
Lulu, now 75, is about to embark on her last ever tour, exactly 60 years after she made her debut with the hit single “Shout.” The tour is a “celebration” of all her best-known songs, and she has called it Champagne for Lulu after the line uttered by Jennifer Saunders in the episode of Absolutely Fabulous in which Lulu made a cameo. Due to the lingering effects of long Covid, Lulu had to cancel over 30 dates of her 2023 UK tour, which is why she’s decided to make this her last.
With a career spanning over seven decades, Lulu has collaborated with some of the biggest names in music history, from David Bowie to Take That and, of course, she even sang the Bond theme for The Man With the Golden Gun. She’s learned a lot over the years, including the importance of maintaining an inner life while in the public eye. “Fame is only what’s on the outside,” she says. “It’s very important to have an inner life, and take care of your inner life, which is giving yourself a break sometimes.”
