Interpol has announced that they will be performing their biggest gig yet, a free show in Mexico City’s iconic 280,000-capacity ceremonial square, Zócalo, on Saturday, April 20. The concert is expected to be “the biggest show of their career” and will be Mexico’s largest concert event of the year so far. The announcement was made on social media, and the Mexican government and Secretariat of Culture of Mexico City also confirmed the news on Twitter.
A press release announced that the concert will be an opportunity for Interpol to give back to their long and dedicated Mexican fan base for their unconditional support over the years. This large-scale performance will be a dream come true for the band, who are thrilled to perform in such an iconic and historic setting. Paul Banks, Daniel Kessler and Sam Fogarino, the musicians who make up Post-punk band Interpol, plan to give it their all, and they cannot wait to entertain all their fans from Mexico and beyond.
Interpol, based in New York City, previously headlined Corona Capital Mexico City in 2019 and Corona Capital Guadalajara in 2023, respectively, the two biggest festivals in Mexico. In 2022, they played at the 26,000-capacity Palacio de los Deportes in Mexico City. Following their planned show in Mexico City, Interpol will play at numerous US festivals before embarking on their ‘Antics’ 20th anniversary UK tour in November.
Interpol is also scheduled to open for Smashing Pumpkins in Europe this summer and has a new album in the works. According to guitarist Daniel Kessler, they’re writing more music this year, but they don’t have any specific recording plans yet.
“We really try to feel it out each night per situation. I saw Smashing Pumpkins play when I was in high school, so it’s really great to be playing with them,” he said
