Twitch is taking action against streamers that use their chests and bums as greenscreens to stream gameplay. Morgpie, a popular streamer, recently went viral for using her greenscreened bum to stream Fortnite. The Twitch Support Twitter account posted a statement in March acknowledging that the platform must keep up with emerging behaviours. Twitch will update its rules to prevent streamers concentrating on intimate body parts for extended periods from 29 March.
Twitch frequently changes its rules and u-turns when people push back against broad ones. In June 2023, the platform walked back its plans to change branded ad rules that would have stopped streamers from inserting, embedding, or burning in pre-recorded advertising units into their streams. Twitch also rolled back its updated nude art rules over AI concerns in December 2023.
The rule that Twitch will enforce from 29 March says that streamers cannot show, offer or promote content that focuses on clothed intimate body parts like the buttocks, groin or breasts for extended periods. This rule is a little vague, but it appears a streamer wearing a low-cut top is acceptable, whereas a camera angle focused in a close-up solely on a person’s chest area is not.
Morgpie’s video clip, which went viral, created a range of responses from Twitch followers. Some were disgusted, while others were impressed with the creativity demonstrated by the streamer.
