Shakira’s two sons felt that the film Barbie was “emasculating,” the artist revealed in a recent interview. Asked if she had seen the Greta Gerwig-directed film, which came out last summer, Shakira admitted that her sons didn’t enjoy it. “They felt that it was emasculating,” she said. “And I agree, to a certain extent. I’m raising two boys. I want ’em to feel powerful too [while] respecting women… I like pop culture when it attempts to empower women without robbing men of their possibility to be men, to also protect and provide.”

Shakira is celebrating the release of her latest album, ‘Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran’ which received a four-star review by NME and was debuted last month. The album features solely Spanish tracks, which has been received well by audiences. “With this vulnerable yet versatile collection, Shakira shows there are no limits to the art of her catharsis through song,” spoke NME in their review.

In December, Barranquilla, Colombia, revealed an enormous statue of Shakira that stands 6.5 metres tall, which honours the singer’s successful music career spanning four decades. The statue depicts Shakira swivelling her hips in the move from her famous music video ‘Hips Don’t Lie’. Furthermore, in January, Shakira’s collaboration with producer Bizarrap ‘BZRP Music Sessions #53’ helped her be crowned 2023’s most-searched musician according to Google’s Year in Search.

Amid these successes, Shakira also played a free pop-up show in New York’s Times Square last week, which attracted around 40,000 fans. The artist continues to focus on her music career while raising her two sons and highlighted the importance of empowering women without overshadowing men’s importance in society. “Women have all the tools… without losing our femininity. I think that men have a purpose in society and women have another purpose as well. We complement each other, and that complement should not be lost” emphasized Shakira
