US singer-songwriter Oliver Anthony has unveiled his debut album, ‘Hymnal Of A Troubled Man’s Mind’. The country-folk artist released the album on Easter Sunday (March 31) independently, featuring old classics and a new track called ‘Momma’s been hurting’. “This album represents the most pure and transparent view inside my heart and soul that I could offer,” Anthony said in a statement to Consequence. The singer collaborated with Dave Cobb on production, with instrumental arrangements being recorded in Georgia’s decaying church.

Anthony gained celebrity status last year as the first artist to debut at number one on Billboard Hot 100 chart with his song ‘Rich Men North Of Richmond.’ However, it received mixed reviews due to the controversial lyrics being fatphobic and “right-wing anthem.” Despite the backlash, the former factory worker and farmer defended his lyrics, labelling the debate as “funny to watch,” while at the same time criticising Republicans for “weaponising” the meaning behind the lyrics. Anthony’s song got recognised by Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, and he later performed with Shinedown and Papa Roach.

In the message he shared on social media, the artist stated that he felt “compelled” to release the album on Easter Sunday owing to “the grace that has been afforded to us by Jesus as he took on the entire sin of the world as a payment for us and our inequities.” However, he also mentioned that his album is “intended for the listener to sit down in a quiet place, undistracted, and just listen beginning to end. Every lyric, every note – everything – is intentionally placed.” Anthony saw his album as the true foundation that he intends to build his music career on, with transparency and pureness. He felt overwhelmed with gratitude, recognising that, after the controversy stemming from his song, he could not have been where he was now without the support of his fans
