Jai Dee, a Scottish music producer, has released ‘The Absolutely Massive EP’ on Dance Trax, a sublabel of Unknown to the Unknown. The EP took inspiration from the Big Beat genre of the ’90s and was created during the revival of old-school sounds such as jungle and hardcore starting in summer 2019. Dee desired to produce a big beat-leaning EP after listening to Chemical Brothers and The Prodigy, which were his favorite bands as a kid, as he explains in an interview with Mixmag.
Dee’s latest project draws inspiration from the sonic soundscape of noise created by the old hardcore and jungle artists, eliciting a range of emotions from the listener. He sampled obscure vocals to create a narrative throughout the track and designed contrasting arrangements to keep the listener engaged. While almost all of his productions are heavily old-school rave focused, he strives to give them a contemporary spin. Dee discussed with DJ Haus his desire to make a big beat EP in 2023 while at a pub and its subsequent release after the stars aligned.
The EP was titled ‘The Absolutely Massive EP’ in a tongue-in-cheek manner, referencing big in big beat and XL in XL Recordings, which played a pivotal role in shaping the early industry. Jai Dee’s EP is already available, and fans can check it out through ffm.to/dancetrax064.
