When Elbow were still unknown, they delivered pizza to The Stone Roses whilst the latter were recording their second album in Bury. Guy Garvey, frontman of Elbow, shared the anecdote during his appearance on BBC Radio Manchester when he was asked by host Becky Want to choose a song. He picked Shoot You Down from The Stone Roses’ classic debut. Reminiscing about the first time he heard Shoot You Down and how Ian Brown’s Manchester accent resonated with him, Garvey revealed that Elbow were living in Square One Studios in Bury at the time.
Mark Potter, guitarist of Elbow, delivered pizza to The Stone Roses on one occasion. The band didn’t believe him when he returned and told them, but they found the truth the next night when they went to work with him. They were hiding out in Bury at the time making their second record, and none of the local kids alerted the press that the band was there.
After releasing their tenth studio album Audio Vertigo, Elbow are set to embark on a UK and Ireland headline tour in May. The WAEVE, a duo made up of Blur’s Graham Coxon and singer-songwriter Rose Elinor Dougall who once belonged to Pipettes, will support the band on the tour. Elbow’s latest album is described as their best record in years and one that will blow the cobwebs off some sleepy arenas this summer. The album has a garage-y style with Vox organs and a lot of alt-American country sounds, as the band wears their influences more proudly.
Speaking to NME last October, Garvey described Audio Vertigo as a “big fat record” that has “got some dirt under its fingernails for sure”. The album covers “some pretty inky stuff”, with themes ranging from dysfunctional relationships to a maniacal rant from the perspective of a frontman losing his mind.
