A man has been charged with attempted murder after another man was stabbed on a train. Rakeem Thomas, a 19-year-old resident of Beckenham in south London, was also charged with possession of an offensive weapon. Reports of two men fighting near Beckenham Junction were received by the British Transport Police on Wednesday at around 4 pm. The victim, who is in his twenties, is in critical but stable condition in a hospital. Thomas was sent into custody and will appear at the Old Bailey on April 26.
The attack on the train is one of several that have taken place in London in recent months. There has been an increase in knife crime in the capital, which has been linked in some cases to drugs and gang violence. In 2020, there were 15,000 knife crime offences recorded in London, according to the Metropolitan Police. Despite efforts to tackle the problem, knife crime remains high in the capital, and young people are particularly at risk.
British Transport Police have called on anyone who witnessed the incident to come forward with information. “We take all incidents of violence on the rail network very seriously,” said Ch Insp Stuart Middlemas. “This appears to have been an isolated incident, but we urge anyone who may have witnessed what happened or has any information to contact us as soon as possible.” The police have also increased patrols in the area following the attack.
The incident has led to renewed calls for action to be taken to tackle knife crime in London. Mayor Sadiq Khan has pledged to do more to address the issue, but some critics say that more needs to be done. They are calling for increased police presence and more resources to be provided to youth services to help prevent young people from getting involved in crime. Despite the challenges, many Londoners remain optimistic that the problem can be solved, and that the city can once again become a safe place to live and work
