A 19-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder and possession of an offensive weapon following a train stabbing. Rakeem Thomas has been remanded into custody and is set to appear at Wimbledon Magistrates’ Court on 30 March. British Transport Police received reports of two men fighting on a train between Beckenham and Shortlands railway stations at approximately 4:00 pm on Wednesday. The victim, who is in his twenties, is in critical but stable condition in the hospital, according to BTP.
The police are continuing to engage with witnesses and would like anyone who has more information to come forward. Detective Superintendent Gareth Williams, from BTP said, “This was a violent and concerning incident which has understandably caused considerable alarm. I am grateful to our colleagues from Kent Police and London Ambulance Service for their swift assistance which led to the arrest of a suspect within minutes. We are now supporting the victim’s family while the investigation continues.”
The stabbing occurred on a Southeastern train service traveling from Grove Park to Bromley North. Following the incident, the train was stopped at Beckenham Junction station and the victim was treated by emergency services. Commuters have expressed their concern about the safety of the railway network and have called for more measures to be put in place to prevent such incidences from occurring in the future
