Following the recent release of Denis Villeneuve’s sequel to Dune, Steven Spielberg praised the sci-fi epic’s director during an episode of The Director’s Cut podcast, which aired on March 26. Spielberg referred to filmmakers who “build worlds” and noted that Villeneuve has become a member of an esteemed list that includes George Lucas, Stanley Kubrick, Peter Jackson, Christopher Nolan, Ridley Scott, and Guillermo del Toro. Spielberg stated that “you have made one of the most brilliant science-fiction films I’ve ever seen.”

Spielberg went on to discuss the way water plays a key role in a movie that is set almost entirely in the desert. According to Spielberg, Dune portrayed the desert like an ocean or sea. He singled out a particular scene that depicts one of the characters surfing a sandworm as “one of the greatest things I have ever seen,” and he commended Villeneuve’s skill at making the desert appear fluid and dynamic.

As reported by NME, Villeneuve expressed deep gratitude for Spielberg’s compliments. The filmmaker said, “Steven, you know you are my master, and that is a massive compliment coming from you, so I thank you.” Villeneuve stated that he only intends to make a Dune sequel if it surpasses the quality of the second movie.

Based on Frank Herbert’s classic novel, Dune: Part Two has been receiving acclaim for its stunning visual effects, immersive sound design, and enthusiastic performances from its star-studded cast. The film was released earlier this month and has already earned a four-star review from critics
