To celebrate the ten year anniversary of the first same-sex marriages in England and Wales, ITV presenter Lorraine Kelly conducted the live marriage ceremony of Cardiff couple Luke Avaient and Gavin Sheppard on her daytime programme. The couple had become engaged at a concert by Anastasia. The first same-sex marriages in England and Wales took place at midnight on 28 March, 2014. At the time, same-sex couples could only enter civil partnerships.
Stylist Mark Heyes, who helped the couple to choose their wedding suits, called them “two of the most lovely fellas I’ve ever met”. Singer Alfie Boe, a guest on the show, performed a rendition of Foreigner’s “I Wanna Know What Love is” for the newlyweds, who exchanged vows and rings and promised to “love each other today, always and forever”.
Kelly, who wore a rainbow-striped dress for the occasion, said it was a “real privilege” to be a witness to the wedding. “It’s been so lovely, so gorgeous and for everyone to be here as well on this really special occasion,” she added. Lorraine thanked the couple for sharing their “really special occasion”.
Nurse Gavin described the wedding as “amazing”, while consultant Luke said being married was “totally different”. Following their wedding on live television, Gavin and Luke left for their honeymoon in Santorini, Greece
