Robert Hood returns with minimal techno EP ‘Alpha Key’

Robert Hood’s latest EP, ‘Alpha Keys’, is set to be released on both vinyl and digital formats via M-Plant on April 12. The four-track EP is the first solo release from the Detroit pioneer under the Robert Hood moniker since ‘Hectic / Amazon Dust’, which was released in 2022. The forthcoming record will include “characteristically Hood Music,” according to a statement surrounding its release.

‘Alpha Keys’ follows Robert Hood’s collaboration in 2023 with Fela Kuti, ‘Variations’. A live recording of the performance between the artists during a Paris show in November 2019. According to The Quietus, the event was a celebration of the life and work of James Brown and was broadcast on the French TV series La Compagnie des Indes & Sourdoreille.

Robert Hood began making music under the name Robert Noise and has released music under various aliases, including Monobox, Inner Sanctum, and the Vision. He continues to make music under the name Floorplan, a father-daughter duo consisting of him and his daughter Lyric Hood. The two will release an album on Classic, but no details have yet been announced.

Hood’s daughter first had the idea of incorporating techno into communion, leading to the formation of Floorplan. Robert Hood unveiled details of his latest EP, which will be available in both digital and vinyl formats via M-Plant. ‘Alpha Keys’ will include characteristically Hood Music and feature the techno pioneer’s first-ever solo release under the Robert Hood moniker. The collaboration with Fela Kuti, ‘Variations’, was a live performance during a James Brown celebration in France in November 2019, with the recording released in 2023. Despite initially releasing music under the moniker Robert Noise, Hood has continued to work under various aliases, and he collaborates with his daughter Lyric Hood to produce gospel-inspired electronic music as Floorplan.
