Anne Hathaway remembers “angel” Christopher Nolan backing her amid online “humiliation”

Actress Anne Hathaway has hailed director Christopher Nolan for supporting her when she came under a vicious online attack. Hathaway was targeted around the time she won her Oscar for Les Misérables in 2013, and found many filmmakers were refusing to cast her due to the resulting backlash on social media. She said Nolan was an “angel” for coming to her rescue with a role in his 2014 hit Interstellar, adding that he gave her “one of the most beautiful roles I’ve had in one of the best films that I’ve been a part of”.

Hathaway revealed that many people had refused to give her roles because they were concerned about her online reputation. She told Vanity Fair that if Nolan realised what he was doing for her at the time, he had a huge impact. Hathaway’s career did not lose momentum because of Nolan’s help. She also took time to reflect on that difficult period of her life, stating that “humiliation is such a tough thing to go through. The key is to not let it close you down”. She also said that anyone who asks people to invest time, money and attention in them needs to give something worth all of those things.

Hathaway has previously spoken about the situation at Elle‘s Women in Hollywood, where she declared she no longer wanted to create art out of a place of hate. She added that she would no longer speak the language of hate, live in fear of it or hold space for it, stressing that hate is the opposite of life because it is so destructive. Hathaway’s career has gone from strength to strength since that rocky time and she is reportedly being lined up to star in series two of Beef on Netflix alongside Jake Gyllenhaal.

Nolan has recently won the Oscar for Best Director for his work on Oppenheimer, which also took Best Picture, along with five other awards. Hathaway and Nolan worked together on Interstellar, a critically acclaimed sci-fi that received an impressive five Oscar nominations on release
