Tony Blackburn has decided to present his last BBC local radio show after 43 years; however, the DJ mentioned that his time on BBC local stations had been a pleasure. The 81-year-old gave no explanation for leaving but mentioned that he would pursue other projects. Blackburn will now concentrate on his BBC Radio 2 shows and theatre tour since he received an OBE medal earlier this week. He will celebrate 60 years in radio in July this year.

Blackburn started his career at pirate radio stations Radio Caroline and Radio London. He worked from 1964 to 1967 and first became the DJ on BBC Radio 1 when it launched in 1967. Blackburn also became the anchor for a series of high-profile radio and TV shows, including “Top of the Pops.”

At the end of his show, Blackburn bid farewell to his listeners: “Forty-three years on BBC local radio and that’s it as far as I’m concerned. It’s been a pleasure being here… From me, Tony Blackburn, to BBC local radio – Bye-bye.”

BBC has mentioned that Blackburn has left with no hard feelings, and BBC Southern regions took to social media to bid farewell to Blackburn and wished him all the best.
