Ahead of the release of her forthcoming album ‘All Born Screaming’, St. Vincent has shared insight into her experience producing the album alone. Speaking on Matt Wilkinson’s show on Apple Music 1, she revealed that producing the album made her feel like a “God.” The musician has previously co-produced her albums Masseduction and Daddy’s Home, with ‘All Born Screaming’ being the first she has worked on alone.
St. Vincent described the process of producing her upcoming album as a somewhat “tedious” yet essential process. She said that working alone helped her hone down her production to the “guttural essence” and recognize the four-seconds-worthy elements of a song. Apparently, there were times where psychedelics may have been involved, but who’s asking? For her, it was as if she was playing with lightning, harnessing chaos, and turning to knobs to create the perfect tune.
The musician said that the mood of the album was like “the sound of the inside of my head,” and it represented the agony and ecstasy of life and death. Speaking to NME on the red carpet at the Brit Awards, Clark shared that the album would be a “heavier record,” a sound that embodies “black, white and all the colours in a fire.” Clark collaborated with close musical friends to produce the album, including Dave Grohl, Josh Freese, Justin Meldal-Johnsen and Mark Guiliana.
One song on the album, ‘Sweetest Fruit,’ was inspired by the late producer SOPHIE’s untimely death. Clark was inspired by her passing, stating that the idea of falling purely for wanting a better view of the moon was poetic. She explained that the song aimed to convey the message of “people trying for transcendence” and not necessarily achieving it but “taking a big swing for something beautiful.”
‘All Born Screaming’ is set for release on April 26th
