Soft Play, formerly known as Slaves, have spoken to NME about their latest single “Mirror Muscles.” The nu-metal inspired track was originally written by drummer and vocalist Isaac Holman for his solo project Baby Dave. He showed it to guitarist Laurie Vincent, who decided they should have it for Soft Play because it was “too good a song not to share.”
The band’s decision to embrace what first inspired them has been well received by fans, with Mirror Muscles a “real homage to those ’00s bands.” Vincent revealed that he stopped trying to be “this cool person that only liked Radiohead” and instead began embracing the nu-metal bands he loved as a kid, such as Linkin Park. This change in influence has helped the band twist the conversation around masculinity even further.
Despite the snarling music they create, Soft Play have also expressed openness about their mental health, and their profile picture on social media depicts the pair embracing in a tender moment. It’s all part of the plan to “be as real as possible,” said Holman. “We can be aggressive and make high energy music, but we can also be chill and have a little cuddle. This feels like the most authentic we’ve ever been.”
The band’s fourth album is set to be released this year, featuring a track written from the perspective of the movie character John Wick. Vincent praised Holman’s lyrics as the best he’s ever written, while Holman explained that there was something about Vincent’s riffs that made him want to scream. “It all felt so natural and so easy, which is when we’re at our best,” he said
