Journey’s ‘Don’t Stop Believing’ has been declared the biggest song of all time by Forbes and recently achieved 18x platinum. The Recording Industry Association of America has officially declared ‘Don’t Stop Believing’ to be 18 times certified platinum and it has moved over 18 million units from pure sales and other forms of consumption such as streaming in the US alone.
Previously, in May 2013, ‘Don’t Stop Believing’ had only achieved quadruple platinum status. Lead guitarist, Neal Schon, took to Twitter to celebrate the news, writing “We now officially have the biggest song in the world ever in the history of music! Congratulations to all ??????.”
Former Journey frontman, Steve Perry, also posted on Instagram to celebrate the achievement, thanking his parents for being the inspiration behind the song and reflecting on their love of music. After its release in October 1981, ‘Don’t Stop Believing’ earned Journey the ninth spot on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming one of the band’s biggest hits. The song was featured on the band’s seventh studio LP, ‘Escape’, which reached the top spot on the Billboard 200 upon its release.
‘Escape’ was certified Diamond by the RIAA in July 2021 for achieving at least 10 million sales in the US, making it the band’s most successful studio album and second-most successful album overall, just behind ‘Greatest Hits.’ ‘Don’t Stop Believing’ has become a pop culture staple, featured in the final scene of HBO’s ‘The Sopranos’ series finale ‘Made in America.’
It was also included in ‘Rock of Ages,’ a musical held together by the hits of the 80s, which later turned into a film starring Tom Cruise, and in the pilot episode of the 2009 show, ‘Glee.’ ‘Don’t Stop Believing’ was performed live on tour between 2010 and 2011 and played on the show on seven occasions. Journey has also announced a 50th anniversary UK and Ireland arena tour that will start this autumn
