The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have voiced their support for Catherine, Princess of Wales after it was revealed that she has been diagnosed with cancer. In a statement, Prince Harry and Meghan expressed their hope that Catherine and her family would be able to heal “privately and in peace”. Catherine announced the news on Friday, describing it as a “huge shock” after a difficult few months. She is said to be in good spirits and confident of making a full recovery, although the details of her illness have not been made public.

Catherine underwent abdominal surgery in January, but at the time, there was no indication that she had cancer. Subsequent tests revealed that the disease had been present. Shortly after Harry learnt of his father King Charles’s recent cancer diagnosis, he flew to London to visit him. Earlier this month, both brothers took part in an awards ceremony in honour of their mother Princess Diana, although they were separated by an ocean, with William speaking in person and Harry addressing the event by video link from California.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre offered the US government’s support for Catherine and wished her a full recovery from what she called a “terrible” diagnosis. However, she also emphasised the importance of privacy in such situations. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex made a similar plea, highlighting the need for Catherine and her loved ones to be able to heal in peace
