A 75-year-old Scottish grandmother has become an online gaming sensation thanks to her skills and commentary while playing Fortnite. Cath Bowie, known by her username Grumpygran1948, spends up to six hours a day playing the game online, and her fans have gone global.
Bowie was introduced to Fortnite by her grandson in 2017, and after three years of practice in solo games, she began playing as part of squads that she set up. She wanted to play with older players as she did not like some of the “toxic” language used by younger gamers. “We don’t use the word kill – we use the word eliminate. So it’s not gory and you don’t see anyone lying on the ground with blood. They’re quite tasteful and I like that,” she said.
Her online gaming success got a huge boost when US-based YouTuber SypherPK spotted her gameplay and teamed up with her to play Fortnite. The duo’s first match-up racked up more than half a million views. And she even sang the traditional Scottish children’s song “Ye Cannae Shove Yer Granny Aff A Bus” to SypherPK during one session.
Despite her growing fame, Bowie remains level-headed about her status, saying, “I wouldn’t say I’m famous. I am known but maybe I shouldn’t put myself on a pedestal.” She’s also determined to keep her gaming from affecting her family life, ensuring it remains a nightly hobby that doesn’t intrude on her personal life
