Anna Prior, who is the drummer in the band Metronomy, has revealed the details of her debut solo EP and launched its first single, named ‘Fall Back’. The song has influences from 90s dance music with a thumping beat and bright synth sounds. The lyrics of the chorus are, “If I fall back on you/ It’s hard to say what’s true/ If I fall back on you/ It’s hard to say what’s true,”. The focus of the song is love, and in a press release, Prior revealed that it is about when she realized that love from a partner is never unconditional, which led her to begin searching for people who she knew could never love her so she would never get hurt again.
The accompanying music video for ‘Fall Back’ was directed by Tom Furse, marking the second AI video he made in collaboration with Prior. The video is about when she walks into “room two” of the club, where everything is shiny, glittering, and clean, and it is the antithesis to the anxiety-inducing “main room” of Tech Não. It was announced that Anna Prior’s debut solo EP ‘Almost Love’ will be released on June 13 via House Anxiety, with James Greenwood, Moullinex, and PPJ as producers. Prior found inspiration for the album’s lyrics from the existential poetry of 19th and 20th century Portuguese romantics, which she discovered while spending time in Lisbon. The EP focuses on “things, people and moments being just out of reach – of ‘almost’ being there but not just yet, not quite,” as per the press release.
The ‘Almost Love’ tracklist is as follows: ‘Almost Love,’ ‘Tech Não,’ ‘Fall Back,’ ‘Under A Halo,’ ‘Nervous,’ ‘Up2You,’ and ‘Who Is She.’ In other news, Metronomy signed to a new label, Ninja Tune, and released their innovative new single named ‘Nice Town’. Previously, their last EP came with different favourites, such as Biig Piig, Spill Tab, Pinty, Folly Group, Brian Nasty, and emerging heroes like Sorry. Joe, the lead vocalist of Metronomy, said that he wanted to work on the project because some of the foundational albums he listened to while growing up were guest-studded, which always interested him, around the release of ‘Posse’.
Prior has managed to put together a remarkable debut EP, and it is quite distinguishable from the music she provides with Metronomy. Her solo songs are more personal than anything, and ‘Fall Back’ is an ideal illustration of that. There are more details of the EP to come, and it is definitely worth checking out if you are into pop-inflected dance music. Though the fall back in relationships may feel disappointing, Prior has turned her love setback into something spectacular that is set to establish a reputation for herself outside of Metronomy
