Several stores belonging to bakery chain, Greggs, have been closed or accepting cash only due to an issue with the chain’s payment system. Greggs has over 2,450 locations across the UK, however, it is not clear how many of these stores were affected by the payment problem. The company announced that it is trying to resolve the issue as soon as possible. Customers expressed their disappointment on social media as they were being denied products because they did not have cash.
Sainsbury’s and Tesco had payment outages over the weekend on Saturday and McDonald’s the previous Friday. A worker from a Greggs store in Manchester revealed that no items were displayed after the tills were turned on Wednesday morning due to an error. However, the store was eventually able to trade as the tills were later fixed. Stores in major UK cities such as Glasgow, London, Manchester, and Cardiff reportedly experienced problems but several stores confirmed that they operated normally.
Technical glitches have significantly impacted several of the UK’s major brands. Sainsbury’s, for example, had trouble fulfilling most online grocery deliveries due to overnight software updates that also had an impact on contactless payments in stores. Unrelated technical glitches also caused Tesco to cancel several orders. On the day before the Greggs incident, McDonald’s experienced a “global technology system outage” that halted orders in its restaurants around the world.
Fans of the bakery chain have been joking on social media about the issue, stating that IT problems faced by other brands are minor, but IT problems at the sausage roll makers are unacceptable.
