‘Alien: Romulus’ trailer teases the return of the facehuggers

In a new trailer released for the upcoming seventh mainline entry to the Alien franchise, Alien: Romulus, directed by Fede Álvarez and produced by Ridley Scott, the terrifying facehuggers make their return. The film is set to be released on August 16, 2024, and stars Cailee Spaeny and Isabela Merced, among others. The clip also features an eerie scene set in a dimly-lit space station, complete with parasitic facehuggers scurrying and jumping on their victims.

Other actors set to star in the film include David Jonsson, Archie Renaux, Spike Fearn and Aileen Wu. The movie has been described as a standalone entry and marks the ninth movie involving acid-blooded xenomorphs, if you include the Aliens vs. Predator crossover films.

Meanwhile, an Alien TV series is also in development at FX, which was originally announced in December 2020. Filming on the show, created by Noah Hawley, is set to start this year, after production on the fifth season of Fargo wraps. In an interview about the upcoming show in 2021, Hawley said the series would be set on Earth and wouldn’t be connected to Ripley’s (Sigourney Weaver) story.

The last film in the Alien franchise was 2017’s Alien: Covenant, also directed by Ridley Scott, which served as a sequel to 2012’s Prometheus. In a four-star review of the film, NME shared, “If you’ve ever enjoyed an Alien film, this one is worth spending two hours in space for.”
