Valve, the popular game development and digital distribution company, has recently launched a beta program for its new Steam Families plan. It replaces both Steam Family and Steam Family View to provide a more comprehensive solution for parents who want to monitor their children’s gaming habits.
Steam Families combines elements from both of its predecessors into one platform. Six accounts can be connected, with adult accounts being able to limit playtime and determine which games children have access to. All accounts can access each other’s game libraries, but multiple copies are required if two or more accounts want to play the same game simultaneously.
Parents have complete control over their children’s account, including the ability to monitor playtime and restrict access to the Steam Store, Community, and friends chat. They can also approve or deny requests for additional playtime, temporary or permanent feature access, and even entire shopping baskets, making it easier for parents to manage what games their children can play.
Steam Families is still in beta, and gamers can access it by following a series of steps on their client. It is limited to six family members, and if a slot needs to be refilled, the user will have to wait a year to rejoin.
