During a recent interview with Mojo Magazine, Pearl Jam vocalist Eddie Vedder shared that taking his daughter to a Taylor Swift concert reminded him of going to punk rock shows as a young man. Vedder was struck by the passion and inclusivity of the young Swift fans, and compared it to the sense of community he experienced growing up.
He recalled how he and his daughter made friendship bracelets together before the show, and how the young fans were trading bracelets with messages like song titles and lyrics on them, creating acts of goodwill and kindness among the crowd. Vedder found it “galvanising and powerful” to see the devoted fans aligning around something they loved, and it reminded him of punk rock crowds where he felt aligned with the “misfits” in his town.
Vedder grew up in Illinois, and spent his teenage years between San Diego and Chicago, where he became heavily involved in the local punk scenes, joining several bands along the way including Surf and Destroy, Indian Style and Bad Radio. Vedder sees similarities between his punk rock days and the Swiftie culture.
Pearl Jam recently announced their new album Dark Matter, which will be released on April 19, 2022, and released its title track and lead single. The band also announced a massive world tour that will cover North America, the UK, Europe and Australia from June to November. This tour includes two huge UK shows in Manchester and London, and tickets can still be purchased for both.
Last month, Vedder performed with Post Malone at a benefit concert in Tennessee, where they played Pearl Jam’s ‘Better Man’ and Tom Petty’s ‘I Won’t Back Down’. Vedder continues to stay active in the music world and find inspiration in unexpected places
