Cillian Murphy’s former teacher has shared some insights about the actor’s personality during his school years. Pat Kiernan was Murphy’s drama teacher and revealed that he didn’t initially recognize his acting talent. However, he was impressed by Murphy’s commitment to his band, Sons of Mister Green Geneshe, and theater company Corcadorca.
Kiernan recalled the moment when Murphy was inspired by a production of A Clockwork Orange and later admitted it as the main reason for wanting to become an actor. He cast Murphy in 1996 play Disco Pigs after he finished school, admitting that he initially hesitated because he thought Murphy was “goofy-looking”. However, Kiernan did recognize Murphy’s intelligence and work ethic, and he believed that Murphy’s practical approach to work still influences him today.
Murphy’s recent Best Actor win at the Oscars for his lead role in Oppenheimer was a proud moment for Kiernan. He revealed that Murphy acknowledged his role in his success, saying “I blame you”. However, Kiernan also noted that fame hasn’t changed Murphy’s personality – he is still the same lovely guy he knew 20 or 30 years ago. During his Oscar speech, Murphy dedicated the award to peacemakers everywhere, reflecting on the themes of Oppenheimer.
In addition to his Best Actor win, Oppenheimer also won six other awards during the Oscars night, including Best Picture and Best Director for Christopher Nolan.
