Sainsbury’s has announced that it will be unable to fulfill the “vast majority” of online deliveries on Saturday due to “technical issues.” Customers have been reaching out to the supermarket on social media to report problems with their online orders, while some stores are also experiencing issues with contactless payments. The retailer has apologized to customers and is working diligently on fixing the problem, which was caused by an overnight software update.
Customers have taken to social media to share their experiences. Some have stated that their deliveries have not arrived, while others have indicated that they were due for a delivery but never received a confirmation and were not charged. As a result of the issues, BBC News visited three Sainsbury’s Local stores in central London, all of which were impacted by technical glitches.
In two of the stores, contactless payments were not functioning, leaving consumers who typically pay with their phone struggling if they did not have a bank card or cash. Meanwhile, a Sainsbury’s Local in Tottenham Court Road informed customers that it was cash-only because chip and pin was not working in the store. According to Sainsbury’s, all of its stores are operational today and accepting chip and pin and cash payments.
Sainsbury’s is the UK’s second-largest supermarket chain, with over 600 supermarkets and over 800 convenience stores. Due to an issue caused by an overnight software update, the company has been unable to fulfil the bulk of online grocery orders and is still unable to contact customers directly. However, it assured customers that it is working hard to fix the problem and will reschedule deliveries as soon as possible
