Fast food chain McDonald’s experienced technical difficulties in several countries, causing disruption in service. It was reported that customers in the UK, Australia, Austria, Germany, Japan, and New Zealand were hit with IT issues early in the morning, which continued all day. The problem was not related to cyber-security, and the issue has been resolved in some countries.
McDonald’s issued an apology statement to its customers and thanked them for their patience during the disruptions. The message assured customers that the company’s IT team resolved the issue in the UK and Ireland. However, it is uncertain if the problem was resolved in the other affected countries.
Downdetector, a system watch used to monitor IT problems in businesses, showed an increase in issues surrounding McDonald’s UK app from around 5:00 GMT on Friday, 27th August. McDonald’s blamed the outages on technical issues and not a cyber-attack. The fast-food chain has many restaurants worldwide, with more than 14,000 stores operating in the United States, and nearly 3,000 stores in Japan.
A spokesperson for Australian McDonald’s asserted that they were aware of the situation, and their restaurants nationwide were impacted. The branch was working to resolve the issue in all their establishments as soon as possible. Meanwhile, social media users in several countries aired their grievances about the outage, including posters from China and Sweden.
