Zack Snyder, the writer-director of Netflix’s sci-fi epic “Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire”, has responded to the negative reviews given to the film. In a recent interview with Empire, Snyder expressed his surprise towards the hostile reaction the film has received. Despite the critical response and scoring just 21% on Rotten Tomatoes, Snyder stated that he doesn’t “really have a rebuttal to the reviews” and that his movies are always polarising. He also added that “it doesn’t seem like there’s that much in it that would warrant such visceral responses.”
Originally pitched as a Star Wars movie to Lucasfilm, “Rebel Moon” depicts the story of a former soldier played by Sofia Boutella recruiting warriors from neighbouring planets to fight the evil Imperium as her farming colony faces a grave threat. Though Snyder didn’t let negative reviews get to him, the same is not true for Boutella. She revealed in an interview with Vulture that the criticism really affected her, especially since a lot of hard work and dedication was involved in the project.
“Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver” will be released in April on Netflix. Snyder also plans on releasing R-rated director’s cuts of both instalments at a later date. He believes that the director’s cuts have “all the gore and the hard R-ness and the nudity and the violence and crazy shit. They’re insane. It’ll be interesting to see what the [critics] say about the director’s cuts. That’s a different kettle of fish.”
Though negative reviews have been pouring in, Snyder and Boutella continue to stand proud of the product they’ve created and have promised viewers an even more intense experience with the forthcoming director’s cuts
