A massive fire broke out at a block of flats in Breadalbane Street, Leith in Edinburgh, forcing residents to evacuate in the early hours of the morning. Around 45 firefighters were on the scene with the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) saying that nine fire engines and a height appliance were in use after the alarm was raised at 04:10. Police Scotland were also in attendance. Fortunately, the building was evacuated and no further reports of injuries were made.
Resident Harry Williams said the fire started in one flat, but it quickly spread to other flats after the alarm went off at around 04:00. Williams also said that the fire was initially small but then became rapidly uncontrollable. He counted at least five flats that appeared heavily damaged by the fire, with 15 to 20 others potentially damaged by smoke. Currently, there are no reports of injuries.
Williams said that 150 residents stood outside in shock and frustration because they had to watch their possessions being destroyed by the fire. He said it was terrible to see people’s homes burning down. At the time of writing this article, the fire was still spreading through another flat, setting off alarm bells for the safety of nearby residents.
The SFRS confirmed it is still trying to contain the fire. Eyewitnesses said that the police are looking after them and had taken them to a building across the road. No further comments have been given regarding the fire by Police Scotland
