The UK release of Drive-Away Dolls, the first solo directorial feature by Ethan Coen, is set for this week. The movie stars Margaret Qualley and Geraldine Viswanathan as two friends who cross paths with an inept group of criminals during a road trip. Co-starring Bill Camp, Colman Domingo, Beanie Feldstein, Pedro Pascal, and Matt Damon, the feature will be released in the UK on March 15. Joel and Ethan Coen have worked individually over the past few years after 30 years of modern film classics collaboration such as The Big Lebowski, Fargo, No Country For Old Men, and Barton Fink. Joel directed the 2021 film The Tragedy of Macbeth after their last film together, the 2018 Western anthology The Ballad of Buster Scruggs.
Ethan’s wife Tricia Cooke co-wrote Drive-Away Dolls, and he stated that working with her was “just another different movie for me.”
The feature’s musical score, composed by Carter Burwell, as with many of Ethan Coen’s films, features transgressive pop music. Featured in the film are songs such as ‘Blue Bayou’ and ‘Long Long Time’ by Linda Ronstadt, ‘Maggot Brain’ by Funkadelic, ‘Patti’s Dream’ by Kennelmus, ‘You Belong to Me’ and ‘Fly Me To the Moon’ by Diana Krall, ‘Dance’ by ESG, ‘Eau d’Bedroom Dancing’ by Le Tigre, ‘Peanut Butter’ by The Liverbirds, ‘Fire’ by Lizzy Mercier Descloux, ‘Never Nowhere’ by Longstocking, ‘I Love You’ by Asie Payton, ‘Cryin’ My Eyes Out (Lyin’ Beside You)’ by Shannon Shaw, and ‘Got My Mojo Working’ by Joyce Harris & The Daylighters.
