Ichiro Mihara, the vice president and Mega Man producer of Arika, has sparked rumors of an upcoming Mega Man project. Arika, founded by former Capcom employees in 1995, is behind popular video game titles such as Tekken 8, Super Mario Bros. 35, and several Street Fighter games. Ichiro Mihara himself had contributed to Mega Man Network Transmission for the GameCube.
A large discussion on social media about Mega Man prompted manga artist Hitoshi Ariga to explain his familiarity with the franchise. Responding to Ariga’s tweet, Mihara wrote, “I used to make Rockman’s *** , *** , and **** official **** , so I’m a bit familiar with Rockman.” This comment was accompanied by a close-up image of Mega Man wearing a previously unseen helmet, leading some fans to speculate that this could be concept art for Mega Man Network Transmission or a new title.
Capcom, the owner of the Mega Man franchise, had previously released a poll earlier this year about creating sequels and remakes of its most popular titles. Mega Man was on the list of shortlisted franchises, along with Street Fighter, Resident Evil, Dragon’s Dogma, Dino Crisis, Ace Attorney, Devil May Cry, Lost Planet, and Dead Rising. Fans were also able to provide feedback through a multiple-choice complaints section, asking Capcom to release more original titles and not just sequels.
Capcom has promised to consider customer feedback when devising its title lineup and recently announced the release date of remastered Monster Hunter Stories. Meanwhile, Monster Hunter: World has become the studio’s best-selling game ever.
