Al Pacino will release a memoir, titled Sonny Boy, chronicling his personal and professional life. The book will focus on Pacino’s childhood in New York, his unconventional upbringing with his mother and her parents, and his years attending New York’s High School of Performing Arts. Additionally, the memoir will detail Pacino’s early work in the avant-garde theatre scene of the 60s and 70s, along with his iconic roles in movies like The Panic of Needle Park, The Godfather, The Godfather Part II, Serpico, and Dog Day Afternoon. The book has been described as “an astonishingly revelatory account of a creative life in full.”
The memoir has been published by Penguin Random House and is set for release on October 8. Speaking about the book, Pacino stated: “I wrote Sonny Boy to express what I’ve seen and been through in my life. It has been an incredibly personal and revealing experience to reflect on this journey and what acting has allowed me to do and the worlds it has opened up.” Pacino added, “My whole life has been a moonshot, and I’ve been a pretty lucky guy so far.”
The memoir cover features a black-and-white photograph of Pacino as a young boy. The book’s title, Sonny Boy, was also what Pacino’s mother called him as a child. Penguin Random House has already opened pre-orders for the memoir on their website.
Despite the coronavirus pandemic, Pacino’s acting career has remained active. He has starred in multiple TV series throughout 2020 and 2021, including Hunters, The Godfather: The Death of Michael Corleone, and Once Upon a Time in Queens
