London-based artist Hak Baker recently performed at the BBC Radio 6 Music Festival held across Greater Manchester. During his set, Baker covered the Stone Roses’ classic ‘I Wanna Be Adored’ to an enthusiastic crowd. He introduced the song, saying “If you think you know this one, you probably do”, and thanked the Manchester audience for joining him in such a special moment. Baker’s unique take on the song can be seen in the video below.
Last year, Baker released the single ‘Windrush Baby’, which was written in celebration of the Windrush generation, of which his grandmother and mother were a part. Speaking to NME, he said “With Windrush Baby, I wanted to switch the trials and tribulations of the past, especially the past 100 years, as empowerment and show the tenacity that we use to survive and continue”. He added that he wanted to celebrate the fact that “even though we’ve been through such atrocities, we’re now in a position – we’re not giving balanced plates to serve off but – where we can turn lives around and be who we always dreamt of.”
Baker’s debut album ‘Worlds End FM’ was also critically acclaimed, with NME describing it as “a successful introduction to Hak Baker as a 21st century troubadour speaking to modern problems with empathy and requisite anger.” The artist has also been added to the bill for the Reading and Leeds festivals this year, alongside acts such as Liam Gallagher, Lana Del Rey, Blink-182, and Catfish & The Bottlemen.
Baker has shown himself to be a versatile and talented artist, drawing on his own experiences and heritage to create music that speaks to contemporary audiences. Whether he is performing classic tracks or original compositions, Baker’s distinctive voice and unique style make him a true original in the world of modern music
