The mother of Brianna Ghey had a private meeting with the mother of one of her daughter’s killers, five weeks after they were found guilty of the murder. Esther Ghey and Emma Jenkinson, the mother of Scarlett Jenkinson, met through mutual contacts of their families, who set up the meeting. Scarlett Jenkinson and Eddie Ratcliffe murdered Brianna, who was 16, in February 2023. Both teenagers are serving life sentences for her “brutal, planned and sadistic” murder.
Esther Ghey described the meeting with Ms Jenkinson as “emotional,” and expressed that the two of them felt a “connection” to each other, since they are both mothers navigating unprecedented situations. Ms Ghey earlier expressed her willingness to meet Ms Jenkinson and wanted to understand their life as a family and what they went through during the murder case.
At the meeting, the two women discussed Esther Ghey’s campaigns, including for age limits for smartphone usage, mindfulness to be taught in every school in England, and stricter controls on access to social media apps. Scarlett Jenkinson and Eddie Ratcliffe had watched videos of the torture and murder of real people on the dark web in the weeks before they murdered Brianna. Esther Ghey empathized with Scarlett’s mother about the difficulty of guiding her own two teenagers and advocating for restrictions on their phone usage.
Ms Ghey met Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Technology Secretary Michelle Donelan to discuss her campaigns last week. She has the support of Labour MP for Warrington North, Charlotte Nicholls, and hopes that Scarlett’s mother, who is also in favor of her initiatives, will join her in working together privately.
