The Sunday Times initially reported that Johnson flew to Venezuela by private jet while on vacation in the Caribbean, but it is unknown who initiated or paid for the visit. Maduro has been ruling Venezuela since 2013, and his reelection in 2018 was widely regarded as neither free nor fair despite widespread protests.
Despite the current diplomatic tensions between the UK and Venezuela, Johnson received a briefing at the British Embassy residence in Caracas before his meeting with Maduro. It remains unclear who paid for the private jet that flew him to Venezuela.
