Pop icon Madonna, famous for her extensive career and music-making, embarrassingly asked a fan in a wheelchair who was in the audience why they were sitting down during her concert in Los Angeles. She was preparing to introduce her next song when she noticed a fan who wasn’t standing up with the rest of the crowd. She then asked, “What are you doing sitting down?” before later realizing the individual was actually in a wheelchair. Quickly afterwards, she apologized for what she described as her “politically incorrect” action, stating that she was grateful for all her fans, including those who were differently-abled.
Kylie Minogue, another pop icon in her own right, joined Madonna on stage to perform two duets, celebrating International Women’s Day. The pair performed Kylie’s iconic track, “Can’t Get You Out Of My Head,” as well as a rendition of Gloria Gaynor’s “I Will Survive,” which Madonna stated was all about survival. The duet also allowed the pair to perform together for the first time, something Kylie believed hadn’t occurred before, as they both prefer to “take our time.”
Madonna’s recent tour impacted her deeply enough to publicly showcase her experience with a near-death experience she had last year, following a serious bacterial infection that led to her hospitalization. During one of her performances, she informed the crowd that she “literally couldn’t walk from [her] bed to the toilet” during the illness and experienced a near-death event in which she was asked whether she wanted to go to heaven. She believed at the time that Madonna must have thought to herself, “No, no.”
Madonna recently unveiled the final date of her celebration global tour – April 9, 2024, at Miami’s Kaseya Center – due to fan demand, bringing her tour to 80 total shows. In London, Madonna received a glowing five-star review from NME and it appears that the rest of the tour is also being warmly received by fans and critics alike. It said that “emotional moments make this show truly special,” and that the tour is a reminder that Madonna is not only a pop star, but also a cultural force who challenged what society expected from women in the public eye
