Kristen Stewart has offered her thoughts on sex scenes in movies, stating that her recent film took a different approach. Ahead of the release of her new film, Love Lies Bleeding, Stewart spoke with NBC about the sex scenes in the movie, saying that they were likely to “shock people.” The Twilight actress went on to address the tired and formulaic approach that is typically taken with simulated sex scenes in movies, calling it “rote.”
Rather than flipping the switch to “sex scene” mode, Stewart said that Love Lies Bleeding took a more nuanced approach to the intimate scenes, focusing on the physical experience and ensuring that the scenes felt “literal instead of faux.” Speaking on the subject, Stewart said that she was “so sick” of seeing formulaic approaches to movie sex scenes and called for more realistic approaches in the future.
Love Lies Bleeding stars Stewart alongside actors Ed Harris and Jena Malone. The film is directed by Rose Glass and set in the 80s, exploring the relationship between a gym manager and an ambitious bodybuilder. The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and will be released in select theaters from March 8th.
Stewart’s co-star Katy O’Brian added further praise for the movie’s approach to sex scenes, noting that viewers can learn from the film by realizing that communication and openness are key to achieving greater physical intimacy in their own lives. Overall, Love Lies Bleeding has been praised as an exciting and engaging thriller, earning a four-star rating from publications such as NME
