Artists and music world speak out on International Women’s Day: “We’re on this planet to love and support each other”

International Women’s Day was celebrated on March 8th, with musicians from across the industry coming together to promote women’s rights. The annual event was officially recognised by the UN in 1996 and celebrates the achievements of women while also highlighting the inequality still present in society. The 2024 theme for International Women’s Day was “Invest In Women: Accelerate Progress”.

Countless artists and organisations took to social media to show their support. Norwegian pop punk band Sløtface encouraged fans to use their voices to fight for equality. Independent Venues Week acknowledged the women in their team supporting the UK’s independent venues, while Fabric launched a mix series featuring some of the most formidable new talent in the music industry.

Many artists and companies also took the opportunity to show solidarity with the trans community and highlight transphobia, especially in comments made by Harry Potter author JK Rowling. The Blessed Madonna, Witch Fever, and Lambrini Girls all voiced their support for trans women and condemned any attempt to diminish the rights of women.

International Women’s Day was also celebrated by pop icons Kylie Minogue and Madonna, who performed a duet during Madonna’s recent ‘Celebration’ tour. The musicians sang Minogue’s ‘Can’t Get You Out Of My Head’ and Gloria Gaynor’s ‘I Will Survive’ in front of a live audience.

As the conversation on intersectionality continues, it is inspiring to see musicians and organisations alike taking the opportunity to use their platforms to support women and marginalised communities on this important day
