Southampton fire: Firefighters continue to tackle 'deep-seated' blaze

Firefighters are still battling a “deep-seated” fire that broke out near Southampton FC’s St Mary’s Stadium on Wednesday. The blaze started at industrial premises near the stadium and sent a huge plume of smoke across the city. The material involved is believed to be plastic, and over 100 firefighters attended the scene.

Marine Parade, where the incident occurred, remains closed, and those living nearby have been warned to keep windows and doors closed. The blaze led to a match between the Saints and Preston being cancelled, and Southampton City Council has issued advice to locals to avoid disturbing debris from the fire.

The cause of the blaze is yet to be established, and fire crews are working to put out hotspots that are still burning. Due to the partial collapse of the building housing the fire, firefighters have been prevented from going inside. A spokesman for the fire service said they hoped to extinguish the fire at some stage on Thursday.

One person was treated for smoke inhalation but no other injuries have been reported. The stadium was to have hosted the cancelled match against Preston, and South Central Ambulance Service has warned that a fire presence is likely to continue in the area for some time.
