A massive fire that broke out at a police station located in east London has now been brought under control. According to a statement released by the London Fire Brigade, the roof of the Forest Gate Police Station on Romford Road was completely destroyed in the fire that started at 4PM GMT on Wednesday. However, despite the huge flames and intensity of the blaze, no injuries have been reported so far. Sources have stated that the fire appears to have broken out on the third floor of the building.
Over one hundred and seventy-five firefighters, along with thirty fire engines, were sent to the scene of the blaze in order to put it out. Firefighters from stations in nearby Stratford, Leytonstone and Plaistow also arrived to help local firefighters combat the fire. Four long turntable ladders were deployed to tackle the fire from above while drones were used to help firefighters gain a better understanding of the situation below. According to fire department officials, firefighters were able to prevent the fire from spreading to surrounding buildings, despite its extensive reach.
The incident is not initially being treated as suspicious by officials, however, an investigation has been initiated to determine the cause of the fire. Police have stated that normal policing operations will continue in the area, despite the damage sustained to the police station. The fire department has advised that Newham residents keep their doors and windows shut while the ongoing investigations and clear-up are underway. A number of roads were also closed around the police station and people were warned to avoid the area.
London Mayor Sadiq Khan has been in close contact with the fire commissioner and has sought to allay concerns regarding the safety of the area. In a statement, he said that he was reassured that the incident was under control and that people should feel secure, as the police would continue to work towards keeping the public safe. However, the real cause behind the enormity of the blaze that affected the landmark police station remains uncertain at this point in time
