The Championship match between Southampton and Preston North End was called off due to a major fire that broke out near St Mary’s Stadium in Southampton. The smoke from the fire, which originated from industrial units on Marine Parade, could be seen from far-off areas. Although one person was treated for smoke inhalation, no other injuries were reported, according to the ambulance service. The fire involved four industrial units and efforts were made to contain it by deploying 18 fire engines. Emergency services also placed a cordon and closed down certain roads to manage the situation.
According to BBC reporter Indy Almroth-Wright, who described the flames as “immense” and added that popping sounds could be heard, the warehouse’s ceiling had caved in, and all windows were shattered, causing fires to break out in several areas. Several pallets were strewn about, and forklifts were used to evacuate them from the region. The fire’s impact was felt at St Mary’s Stadium, with smoke pouring over the north stand. Staff and spectators were evacuated from the stadium in response to the emergency situation.
Southampton FC informed the club’s fans of the situation and expressed their gratitude to Preston and the EFL for their cooperation while recognizing supporters’ frustration and, at the same time, prioritizing the welfare of staff and fans of both clubs. Smoke from the fire was visible all around the city, and locals were requested to maintain closed doors and windows due to the emission of toxic fumes from the fire. Additionally, a hazardous response team was kept on standby by South Central Ambulance Service to assist in the situation.
BBC South has invited individuals to contact them with any news tips, while the authorities have urged people to stay away from the affected area to ensure emergency vehicle movement. Although no damage was reported, the critical situation impacted the match, resulting in its postponement
