Tony De Vit, a legendary British DJ, will be the subject of a documentary showcased at the BFI Flare Film Festival this year. The film, titled “Don’t Ever Stop: Tony De Vit”, which premiered in 2023, follows the rise of the hard house pioneer’s career during the ’90s, including his life as a gay man during a period where the AIDS epidemic ravaged the community. The documentary examines the DJ’s relationships with Andi Buckley, Fergie, and the iconic London gay nightclub, Trade.
The documentary is a compilation of new and old interviews, featuring commentary from friends, family, fans, and the DJ himself. Stuart Pollitt, the film’s director, described the story of how the lives of these three men came together as a “stranger than fiction” tale. Judge Jules, Eats Everything, and Danny Rampling are just a few of the industry names featured in the documentary, who discuss the impact that Tony De Vit had on the music scene.
Despite passing away in 1998, the Birmingham DJ is still held in high regard as a pioneering influence of hard house music. The BFI’s Flare Film Festival is dedicated to celebrating queer cinema and will include screenings, special events, and DJ sets. This year’s programme contains 57 features and 81 shorts from 41 countries, which are divided into three themes: Hearts, Bodies, and Minds.
The festival will feature two documentaries: “Don’t Ever Stop: Tony De Vit” and “Lil Nas X: Long Live Montero”, which chronicles the career of openly gay Black rapper Lil Nas X. The BFI Flare Film Festival will take place on March 22-23 at the BFI centre in Southbank. Visit the film’s official website for ticket information
