Romy has updated NME on her progress in the studio with The xx and whether there are plans for more solo material. In a red carpet interview at the 2024 Brit Awards, Romy confirmed that The xx have been working on new material since she last spoke to NME and that they will meet up again next week. She said, “It’s been really good. I think we’ve all spent time apart and it’s healthy to miss each other.” Romy added that the band is open to trying new things and new sounds, but she emphasised that the music still sounds like The xx, saying, “We’re just keeping it really open and it’s cool to learn from each other again.”
The band’s work with Romy materialises into a full album, it would be their fourth studio LP and follow on from their 2017 record, ‘I See You.’ In her time away from the band, Romy released her debut album ‘Mid Air’, collaborating with Fred Again, Madonna collaborator Stuart Price and Jamie xx. The album received a glowing five-star review by NME, which described it as “a nostalgic but box-fresh dance album that taps into a deep well of feeling.” The positive response was rewarding for Romy, and she hinted to NME that she is already planning to release more solo music in the future, although it may not be in the form of a full album quite yet. She said, “I’d love to keep making more music! I think now I’m really inspired by how the musicians I admire release music, whether it’s an EP or a standalone single.”
Romy added a ‘Club Mid Air’ London date to her upcoming string of US, UK and international shows, which will take place at The Roundhouse on 11 April. She has also been added to the bill for Field Day 2024, alongside Justice, PinkPantheress and 2ManyDJs. Field Day takes place on 7-8 June 2024 in London
