On The Rise: Mei Semones

Mei Semones is a talented artist who blends jazz, bossa nova, and math-y indie rock to create something new and personal. Her music is a way for her to find solace in her favorite genres and express herself in an intuitive way. Her debut single on Bayonet Records, “Wakare no Kotoba,” features technically difficult guitar work and lyrics that bid farewell to a toxic friendship. The song is both an anti-love song and a cathartic experience for Semones.

Rough Trade has announced Mei Semones as part of its curated section called “Rough Trade On The Rise.” Here, the music store puts a spotlight on emerging artists who they are most excited for their customers to hear and become fans of. Her debut EP, Kabutomushi, is set to release on April 5th under Bayonet Records.

Five By Five is a section in which Mei Semones is asked five questions and gives five answers in response. When asked to describe herself in five words, Semones chose soft, sweet, sophisticated, vulnerable, and straightforward. Her top 5 career moments included meeting and playing with her band, co-headlining a tour with Raavi, collaborating with John Roseboro, selling out her first show in Japan at Blue Note Place, and finally, signing with Bayonet Records.

When asked who her 5 VIP guests would be at a pre-release listening party for her album, Semones chose her mom, dad, sister, boyfriend, and grandma. Her top 5 essential tour snacks were strawberry sour punch bites, red or glacier cherry gatorade, matcha latte, Dunkin, and Haribo sour streamers. Mei Semones is a talented artist who has a lot to offer the music world and has quickly gained recognition for her unique style and sound
