British singer-songwriter RAYE has shared her thoughts on her historic win at the 2024 BRIT Awards and the support she has received from fellow artists, including Kylie Minogue. The artist, who garnered a record-breaking seven nominations, took home six awards, including Songwriter Of The Year, Best R&B Act, Song Of The Year, and Best New Artist. In a Winners’ Room interview with NME, she described the night as “the best night of my life” and said she hadn’t quite processed how it feels yet.
RAYE also talked about her grandmother, who was with her during the ceremony. She explained how much she owes to her grandmother, who moved to the UK from Ghana and raised RAYE and her sisters as her parents worked full-time jobs. She also invited her grandmother onto the stage as she took home the Album Of The Year trophy for her debut album My 21st Century Blues. During the interview, RAYE described how similar she is in personality to her grandmother, saying that they are both “dramatic as hell.”
RAYE expressed her excitement at having just met Kylie Minogue and having her songs acknowledged. Minogue won the BRITs Global Icon Award and was the final performer of the night. RAYE said, “It’s a really beautiful thing when you realise other artists — artists you’ve looked up to and listened to since you were a kid — are finding some sort of solace in your art. That’s a full-circle moment of dreams, really.”
During her acceptance speech for Songwriter Of The Year, RAYE made headlines by calling on music executives to allow songwriters to receive royalty payments. She said, “I think we need to have a conversation. I want to normalise giving songwriters master royalty points. It doesn’t have to be at your expense, but it just means that if the songs win big, then the writers get to win big too. Please allow that to happen.”
RAYE’s debut album, My 21st Century Blues, was given high praise by NME, which called it “bold, brilliant and unapologetically her own.” It features gritty, honest lyrics and weird and wonderful genre-spanning instrumentals
