St. Vincent has revealed that a song from her forthcoming album ‘All Born Screaming’ was inspired by the death of highly influential DJ and producer SOPHIE, who tragically passed away at the age of 34 in January 2021. The song, titled ‘Sweetest Fruit’ pays tribute to the artist. In an interview with The Guardian, St. Vincent explained that the circumstances of SOPHIE’s death inspired the track. She stated that she didn’t want it to appear like she was trying to capitalise on someone’s death, but rather that she was an admirer from afar and felt that the way SOPHIE fell was “the most beautiful, poetic thing.” The song itself explores the concept of people trying for transcendence despite the risks.

St. Vincent’s new album ‘All Born Screaming’ will be releasing on April 26. She has already released the “gnarly” comeback single ‘Broken Man’. In an interview with NME, she spoke about her album’s mood, describing it as the “sound of the inside of my head” and explaining that it is about life and death. The album explores what it means to be alive, acknowledging both agony and ecstasy.

SOPHIE’s death has also inspired a song from Charli XCX. She has written a track for her forthcoming album ‘Brat’ that explores her grief following the producer’s death. SOPHIE and Charli XCX worked together on various music projects, and the singer expressed that she had a lot of admiration for the late performer. She felt that SOPHIE believed in her in ways she didn’t believe in myself and stated that the studio was where they could connect and bond over music.

Both St. Vincent and Charli XCX have paid tribute to the late producer’s legacy as an artist, collaborator and catalyst for change
