As Manchester City and Manchester United prepare to go head-to-head in a Premier League match, two music icons from the city have also been competing for attention on the public transport system. Liam Gallagher, a well-known City fan, and John Squire, a former guitarist for the United-supporting band The Stone Roses, have taken over the tannoys on trams and buses throughout the day, as fans made their way to the match.

Gallagher and Squire recently released their self-titled debut collaboration album, which has received positive reviews. Both musicians are known for their passion for football, and with the Manchester derby taking place, the rivalry has been ignited once again. Manchester City, who currently sit 15 points ahead of United in the Premier League table, are looking to close in on Liverpool in the title race, while United are hoping to secure a place in next season’s Champions League.

Liam and his brother Noel, also a musician, are regular spectators at City’s Etihad Stadium, and last season’s treble win prompted calls for an Oasis reunion to mark the occasion. Some fans even pointed to a tweet allegedly written by Liam promising to reform the band if City won the Champions League. However, a spokesperson for Gallagher denied that Liam wrote the tweet and said it was created by a fan.

Despite their differing allegiances, Gallagher and Squire have collaborated successfully on their album, which features the singles ‘Just Another Rainbow’ and ‘Mars to Liverpool’. The album has been reviewed positively, with NME describing it as “a triumph of style and mood”. Later this month, the pair will embark on a sold-out UK tour, beginning in Glasgow on March 13 and finishing in London on March 26
